Doorbraakpijn is een tijdelijke acute – vaak hevige – pijn of toename van pijn die optreedt ondanks voldoende medicatie voor de chronische achtergrondpijn.

Dit review beschrijft alle RCT's met betrekking tot doorbraakpijn bij kanker. De search was tot juli 2009. Acht studies (790 patiënten) konden worden geïncludeerd. De meeste studies onderzochten de buccale en nasale toedieningswegen.
